Millie’s story began over 8 weeks ago. My heart had been set on our due date, August 22 and now that I was one week past our due date I was beginning to feel like this baby was never going to come. Everyone said to sleep and to enjoy going to the store by yourself and spend quality time with your spouse; although I appreciated everyone’s input, all I wanted was my baby.
Alex and I had been married for 4 years when we found out we were pregnant. We were in the “not actively trying not to get pregnant” category of natural family planning. I remember the day so vividly: Thursday December 17, 2015. I had gone to my routine yoga class at the climbing gym and instead of coming home feeling rejuvenated and relaxed I came home feeling heavy and bloated. This was my first clue that something was wrong, so obviously the first thing to do was to take a pregnancy test! Side note: I am the kind of girl who was so excited yet terrified to be pregnant that I would take a pregnancy test at least twice a month, even though I knew it would come back negative. So I figured this time would be no different.
As I peed on the stick I couldn’t help but roll my eyes and think how obnoxious I was for taking this test. Once those three minutes of eternity were up I saw not only one but two distinct lines showing up in the results window! I frantically grabbed the box to compare the results of the test to the directions, and sure enough it was positive. But because I didn’t trust one test, I took not one but two more pregnancy tests to make sure! So many things ran through my mind…Is this real? What does this mean? Maybe these tests were expired? Am I really going to be a mom? Before I got too ahead of myself, I texted Alex and asked him if he could come home over his lunch.
As soon as Alex walked through the door I grabbed his arm and said “I need to show you something” and dragged him into the bathroom. When I showed him the three pregnancy test, he looked at me in disbelief, hugged me and we both started simultaneously laughing and crying. The joy, yet terror we both felt was something I will always remember. This was the day we had been praying for for years and this was the day that would change our lives forever!
